A recent study conducted by the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has revealed that up to 88% of mice vaccinated remained tumor-free. The findings indicate that the vaccine not only shrinks existing tumors but also has the potential to prevent cancer from developing.
The lead author of the study, Prof. Prabhani Atukorale, explained, “We designed these nanoparticles to activate the immune system through multiple pathways. When combined with cancer-related antigens, we can significantly halt tumor growth.”
Traditional vaccines introduce an antigen from the disease agent into the body along with an immune-stimulating adjuvant. However, finding a suitable adjuvant for cancer vaccines has been challenging. To overcome this obstacle, researchers developed a “lipid nanoparticle-based super adjuvant” containing two different adjuvants. This structure enabled the immune system to more effectively recognize and eliminate cancer cells.
When mice were given the super vaccine, 80% were completely protected against melanoma, while none of the mice receiving the traditional vaccine survived more than 35 days. Furthermore, metastasis to the lungs was completely prevented.
In a second phase of the study, researchers conducted a more realistic test using dead cancer cells directly extracted from the tumor. The results showed:
No mice exhibited cancer spreading to other parts of the body.
The research outcomes were published in the Cell Reports Medicine journal. The vaccine, yet to be tested on humans, could potentially serve as a universal platform against multiple cancer types.
Dr. Griffin Kane, a co-author of the study, stated, “Generating tumor-specific T-cell responses is the key factor behind the survival difference.”
Experts suggest that if this technology advances to clinical trials, it could become one of the first treatment methods capable of completely halting cancer spread in the body.
